Welcome back to The High Low!

There’s been a lot of NYC news on my radar this past week. From the city’s first art festival led by and spotlighting trans artists, to an enchanting Easter bonnet parade, to a jingle contest to be judged by Cardi B, to an upcoming Keith Haring exhibition; New York has been giving us all some culturally rich and fun things to look at and look forward to.

Another thing I’m looking forward to (and anxiously awaiting at the same time) is the premiere of Euphoria this Sunday (here’s a recap). The third and final season is coming up, and I’m (not) ready. Until then, I’ll just be watching Sabrina Carpenter’s new music video as preparation for the youthful debauchery to come.

Read to the end for an unexpected way to get rid of potato salad.

The April Fool’s Day Joke That Should Be Real

Instagram post

Every year, April 1 rolls around and our collective trust issues are tested. April Fool’s Day is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it’s fun to see how creative brands can be with their fake products, services, and news. On the other hand, I don’t like getting tricked. This year, New York Bucket List actually got me. I fully believed that we were getting a giant Pizza Rat statue in Union Square.

Now, hear me out! We just celebrated the giant pigeon statue called Dinosaur that was here in NYC for 18 months. That was a very real thing. Getting a Pizza Rat sculpture right after isn’t entirely farfetched. Also, here’s another thing: it should be real. This faux sculptural installation seems perfect for this garbage city I call home.

The subway rodent who once dragged a slice down the stairs and unintentionally became the city’s unofficial mascot deserves its own statue. Plus, it’s been 10 years (almost 11!) since Pizza Rat first gained fame on the L train platform at the 14 Street station. Union Square should pay homage to the humble king of simpler times. This was pre-2016 election, pre-COVID, pre-2024 election, pre-EVERYTHINGHAPPENINGNOW.

So, it may have been an April Fool’s joke for New York Bucket List, but maybe it should be an April…Genius’s…dream-come-true…? Look, we need this win!

  • 🧙‍♀️ It’s been announced that American Horror Story Season 13 will be a continuation of Coven (Season 3) and the cast lineup is like the Avengers of AHS. Jessica Lange is returning to the series after 8 years and she’s joined by Angela Bassett, Sarah Paulson, Kathy Bates, Evan Peters, Ariana Grande, Emma Roberts, Billie Lourd, Gabourey Sidibe, and Leslie Grossman.

  • 🏳️‍⚧️ More than 120 trans artists are having their work featured at New York City’s first-ever Trans Art Fest. This 2-month-long festival of “grassroots arts programming led by all trans artists, organizers, and allies” will include 12 all-trans art exhibitions and more than 20 events taking place all across the city.

  • 🚗 Two of Keith Haring’s rare art cars will be on display in NYC this month. Haring hand-painted a 1963 Buick Special and a 1971 Land Rover Series III within the last 10 years of his life and they will be shown together at the exhibition titled Keith Haring: In the Street at Free Parking (16 Morton St.). This is the very first show at the new gallery space by CART Department and it will be open for 10 days only, starting on April 10.

  • 🚌 NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani met with rapper and Bronx native Cardi B to announce a new jingle contest promoting 2-K enrollment, a program introduced by the beloved mayor that is scheduled to begin this year. (It’s just the first step in his ultimate goal to provide universal child care.) So if you are an NYC resident, at least 18 years old, and have an original 15-20 second song in mind, you can submit your jingle on nyc.gov/jingle. Deadline is April 17, 11:59 p.m.

  • 🍫 While some robbers have been looting museums, others have been busy with a 12-tonne KitKat heist. A spokesperson for the brand said, “We’ve always encouraged people to have a break with KitKat…but it seems thieves have taken the message too literally and made a break with more than 12 tonnes of our chocolate.” The thieves got away, but the snack company has the batch numbers of the stolen goods and created a tracker for people to look up whether their chocolate is from the stolen batch. The Stolen KitKat Tracker tool was unveiled on April 1, and the company spent the day insisting it wasn’t an April Fool’s Day joke.

  • 👞 The last time we saw LEGO and Crocs collab, they released a comical eyesore of a clog. Now, they’ve unveiled the Creativity Clog, which seems like less of an eyesore and more of an obvious crossover for the two companies. This new LEGO x Crocs collection also has jibbitz shaped like LEGO pieces, including minifigs.

  • 📐 The self-proclaimed “Swedish wannabe inventor” Simon Lindberg has crafted a sculptural cabinet that is an undeniably gorgeous piece of furniture. Using magnets and mirrors, this freestanding design is a masterclass in furniture with a bit of suspenseful drama. Opening and closing the cabinet is like watching an operatic ballet, forcing the viewer to slow down and appreciate the fluid forms in motion. Absolutely stunning!

  • 🇦🇺 “Look to the Western (Australia) sky!” is what Elphaba would’ve probably sang last week as the skies were an apocalyptic red Down Under. According to Shark Bay Caravan Park, who shared the footage, there is no filter on the video. It isn’t AI. It’s just a natural phenomenon caused by dust filling the air ahead of Tropical Cyclone Narelle.

  • 🍒 AI slop is evolving… but, like, in a bad way. The big thing as of late has been an onslaught of “fruit slop.” In particular, there has been a miniseries (if it can even be deemed that) called Fruit Love Island. The finale happened and it seems Cherrita won…and then punched out Mangella and Kiwilo… (Whyyyy did I make the effort to learn this..?)

  • 🎵 If you need a song to make you cry, listen to “Younger You” by Miley Cyrus. I recommend listening to the song without watching the music video. The video is very Hannah Montana, which kinda takes away from the depth of the lyrics.
