A gold toilet and the sexiest man alive
The best high-brow and low-brow content of the week.
Welcome back to The High Low!
As we enter Day 35 of the U.S. government shutdown (a tie for the record which had previously happened in 2018-2019 under the Trump administration’s first term), we’re looking to focus on the positives. When we started this newsletter, we had every intention of keeping things as lighthearted and entertaining as possible, and dagnabbit we’re going to do it!

That’s why this week we’re highlighting some really impressive pottery and a fun social media account to put a big ol’ smile on your face.

Ceramics That Look Like Cardboard
Have you ever seen a pitcher made of cardboard and tape? If you haven’t before…well, you still haven’t because the image above isn’t cardboard at all. It’s a ceramic vessel, brilliantly crafted by potter Jacques Monneraud.
The artist’s portfolio of work is a masterclass in mimicry. Each of Monneraud’s hand-thrown creations, of late, looks like pieces of corrugated cardboard that have been assembled with ordinary tape to make interesting pitchers, vases, jugs, and other such vessels. His latest series takes inspiration from the oil paintings of Giorgio Morandi, who was known for his muted still lifes.
Monneraud’s three-dimensional homages to Morandi’s two-dimensional still-life paintings feature textures so convincing that it’s hard to believe your eyes. There’s a quiet elegance about his work, and a simultaneous playfulness that leaves the viewer in awe.
Monneraud’s current exhibition, Life, still., is on view every Saturday in November at Projekt in Brussels, Belgium.

We could all use a little something to make us smile because, really, have you seen the news lately? Well, leave it to SpongeBob to do the trick. Or rather, Movies with SpongeBob, the ingenious social media account that places our favorite sponge and his underwater friends into some of our favorite movies.
Whether it’s Squidward arguing with Jake Gyllenhaal in Brokeback Mountain or SpongeBob and Patrick being berated by Joe Pesci in Goodfellas, the clips are both a walk down memory lane and a good time. New clips are released every Sunday and Thursday at 12 p.m. ET, giving you an appointment you can mark on your calendar.
And it’s not only movies. The feed also throws in the occasional television show, like The Bear and The Office. So if you’re looking for a bit of levity and a reminder that the internet used to be a fun place (and sometimes still can be!), it’s well worth checking out.

💎 Though the stolen Louvre jewels have yet to be found, there have been several arrests and 4 suspects have been charged. Before that happened though, people online were erroneously spreading around a fake mugshot, romanticizing one of the robbers as a handsome man.
🖼️ Art heists seem to be on the rise. Just before the Louvre robbery, more than 1,000 historical objects were stolen from the Oakland Museum of California, including jewelry and antique Native American woven goods. Police have now released surveillance footage of the suspects.
🚽 Artist Maurizio Cattelan is back and he’s going for gold. The artist, best known for a banana duct-taped to a wall which sold for $6 million, has another “masterpiece” going up for auction — a fully functional gold toilet. Called America, the solid 18-karat gold toilet is expected to fetch about $10 million.
🏺 The MFA Boston returned artwork created by an enslaved man back to his descendants. This historic restitution reunited two pieces of pottery by David Drake with his great-great-great-grandchildren. This is one small victory for the Drake family, but they continue to preserve the memory and legacy of the potter through Dave the Potter Legacy Trust.
🤖 Ever wish you had a robot to do your chores? Meet the NEO Home Robot, the newly unveiled $20K humanoid robot that folds your laundry, answers the door for you, and slowly makes you the laziest person alive.
🏗️ The Torre dei Conti, medieval tower dating back to the 13th century, has partially collapsed in Rome, leaving some injuries and one death. This collapse raises questions around worker safety, structural assessment, and city safety measures in heritage sites.
🔮 Do you or someone you know own a tarot deck? Its illustrations could be the work of a forgotten early-20th century artist named Pamela Colman-Smith. Open Culture takes a fascinating look at her work and her life.

👯♀️ My inner Gen X teenager squealed with delight at this conversation between Parker Posey and Lisa Kudrow in Variety. It’s so much fun to watch these two women ruminate on life in Hollywood and reminisce about old times.
📺 After a staggering 46 seasons, MTV has canceled Ridculousness. While the show was never our cup of tea, you have to give respect to anything that remains on the air for so long. There’s speculation that long-term host Rob Dyrdek’s eye-popping salary might have a lot to do with the decision, with reports stating he’d make upwards of $48 million if the show had stayed on air.
💔 The most recent season of Love Island USA may be over, but its contestants are still in the news, and not for good reason. After Huda and her new boyfriend were caught laughing at a racial slur against castmate Olandria, dropped by a caller on their live stream, the internet went wild. Huda claims it was nervous laughter; others aren’t so sure. And Olandria, she’s been silent thus far.
🍿 Back to the Future is back for its 40th anniversary run in theaters and to celebrate the occasion, AMC has released an incredibly cool DeLorean popcorn cup. In fact, it’s so cool that it instantly sold out and can now be found on eBay.
🏳️🌈 The Real Housewives of Orange County ended its season with a bang, as the women confronted returning Housewife Gretchen Rossi about liking anti-LGBT posts on X. In an unusual cliff-hanger for a Housewives show, we were all left with a lot of questions. Luckily, the reunion will start next week…look out for fireworks.
💰 Billie Eilish is challenging other millionaires (and billionaires) to follow her lead and donate sizable parts of their fortune to charity. It’s an admirable stance and one we can only hope others will take as well.
