Welcome back to The High Low!

It’s officially spring (though in NYC, it’s kinda unclear where we are season/weather-wise), and with that comes rebirth! This week, that “rebirth” arrives in the form of SNL UK. The 51-year-long (and counting) US sketch comedy series has finally crossed the pond and made its debut in London over the weekend. Take a look at some highlights below.

‘SNL UK’ Had Its Premiere, Innit?

Tina Fey hosted the very first episode of Saturday Night Live UK over the weekend, and it felt like I entered an alternate universe when watching it. As someone who grew up on the original “Live from New York, it’s Saturday Night!,” it was bizarre to hear “London” in its place. And the show had all the same parts as the original — cold open, host’s monologue, sketches, musical guest, Weekend Update — but it was also quite different. Firstly, there was a lot more cursing in this iteration. Right from the monologue, we heard the host dropping the F-bomb, followed by a cameo from Michael Cera who listed out some of his favorite swear words.

Other surprise guest appearances included Nicola Coughlan, Graham Norton, and Regé-Jean Page. It was a random smattering of celebrities, most of whom appeared in the monologue. The sketches that followed were a mix of live acts and pre-taped skits. Two of the best bits of the night were one of each.

The Last Supper with David Attenborough had a great Princess Diana played by Jack Shep (who was definitely a standout in the episode). But I think my favorite sketch of the night was a digital short, called The Budger, about the people behind all the weird and annoying glitches of the internet.

SNL UK unveiled its hosts and musical guests for the first three episodes. With show #1 done, we have Jamie Dornan up next and Riz Ahmed the following weekend. Interestingly, neither of them have ever hosted SNL in the US, so their sketch comedy skills will be revealed in the upcoming weeks.

  • 🗺️ As if we didn’t have enough promotional material shoved in our faces every day on TV, social media, websites, and public spaces, there are now rumors that Google Maps may start serving ads. This dystopian timeline we’re in is really surpassing anything Black Mirror could possibly think up.

  • 🐌 I kind of love this hand-felted sea slugs art project by fiber artist Arina Borevich. Who knew sea slugs were so cute? She has replicated dozens of species and still has thousands more to go — there are around 3,000 valid species of sea slugs!

  • 🎮 Deemed “the world’s first playable magazine cover,” the Gamepop GP-1 is essentially a book cover that you can actually play Tetris on like a Game Boy. Only 150 copies were released of this innovative (and truly nostalgic) design for The Red Bulletin, RedBull’s game and culture magazine. They say print media is dead, but could video gaming bring back magazines??

  • 👻 A team of scientists (The Dorothy Project) and silk weavers (Taroni) sent a ghostly sculpture into space. They say: “By superimposing this ghostly silhouette onto the planet, our only habitat, and the infinite blackness of space, we create an image that transcends aesthetics and invites reflection on our place in the universe.” Rigghhhttt… things weren’t looking ominous enough on Earth itself, so let’s blast this shiny phantom into the stratosphere. (It does look really cool though.)

  • 🐦 The High Line in NYC had a big ol’ farewell party for the giant bird sculpture known as “Dinosaur” over the weekend. It withstood NYC’s volatile weather for 18 months, but now it’s ready to fly the coop. Crowds flocked to the celebratory send-off, some dressed as birds themselves.

  • 👑 RuPaul’s Drag Race: UK vs. the World had its grand finale and for the first time, a non-UK queen took the crown — Thailand’s Gawdland! A well-deserved win that could’ve been called weeks ago, to be honest. (Also, while we’re being frank, Thailand’s Pangina Heals should’ve won the first season.)

  • 🎭 The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, the beloved contemporary fiction novel by Taylor Jenkins Reid, has been in the works to become a movie at Netflix for years at this point. But while fans wait for that, it looks like an unofficial theatrical production has hit the stage in Brazil. Clips from the play have been circulating on social media, but still no update from Netflix on when this movie adaptation is happening!

  • 👹 Would you see a Lababu movie? Well, it looks like the toothy little monster dolls are headed for the silver screen, whether any of us are interested or not. And Paul King, the filmmaker renowned for writing and directing Paddington and Paddington 2, is on board. As is Steven Levenson, the playwright and screenwriter behind Dear Evan Hansen.

  • 🎥 Here are some movie/TV trailers that piqued my interest in the last week:

    • 🕷️ Spider-Man: Brand New Day - Even though it’s been a minute since I’ve seen or even been interested in seeing a Marvel film, this has me excited. Honestly, it’s just to see Tom Holland onscreen with his real-life wife(?) Zendaya.

    • 🏜️ Dune: Part Three - This other Zendaya film has officially released its trailer, too. The long-awaited conclusion to the epic tale will be out on December 17.

    • 🏝️ Moana - Disney loves a live-action remake of animated films and this is just the latest victim project. But this trailer may be a sign for Disney to stop now. The reaction to the whole thing (especially The Rock’s hair) is less than enthusiastic. Also, despite being “live action,” most of the film seems to be CGI.

    • 🎤 Hacks - The fifth and final season begins on April 9 and it can’t come soon enough! If this trailer is any indication, it’s bound to be a roller coaster of emotion with a ton of cameos (including Katya!).

    • 🪴 This Is a Gardening Show - Zach Galifianakis is back as Zach Galifianakis in this upcoming Netflix series (out on April 22). It seems appropriate for the comedian who had the sporadic talk show, Between Two Ferns. He’s definitely got an interest in horticulture.
