Swarovski earplugs and K-Fed’s memoir

The best high-brow and low-brow content of the week.

Welcome back to The High Low!

This week, Paris loses some crown jewels while Kim Kardashian adds a new kind of hairpiece to her empire. Things are heisty and feisty this week!

We want to give a quick shout out to our pal Sara Barnes who co-hosts a crafting weekend each year with fellow artist Melissa Galbraith. They are currently looking for instructors to teach at their annual event known as Camp Craftaway. This is a great opportunity in the PNW area with some wonderful people. If interested, here’s the form to fill out.

Another shout out goes to Sean Casey Animal Rescue in Brooklyn, NY. They are currently running their Fall Fundraiser in an effort to support themselves as they save and home animals in need. This no-kill animal shelter has been at it for over 25 years and is known for how good they treat the animals they take care of. If you live in the NYC area and can donate, they have some really great prizes up for grabs, including a 58" TV. (Just note that if you do win a prize, you will have to go pick it up at their Brooklyn location in Windsor Terrace.)

The Louvre Gets Looted, Loses Its Crown Jewels

The world’s most-visited museum turned into the stage for a blockbuster heist. On the morning of October 19, 2025, a gang of masked thieves scaled the façade of Paris’ Louvre Museum using a mechanical ladder atop a truck commonly used for moving furniture. The burglars burst through a second-floor window, and made off with eight priceless Napoleon-era jewels in a matter of minutes. Some say it took 4 minutes, others say it was a 7-minute raid — either way, it was pretty fast!

One piece of jewelry (Empress Eugénie’s emerald-set imperial crown containing more than 1,300 diamonds) was dropped and recovered nearby. It was reportedly broken when found outside the museum. What makes this robbery extra thrilling is that it unfolded just half an hour after opening hour, tourists were milling about just feet away from the action, and the thieves zipped off on motor scooters down the Seine-side courtyard with bags of royal jewels. (The New York Times has a visual breakdown of how the heist took place and what happened at precise minutes of that morning.)

Beyond the spectacle, the fallout has been brutal: French officials admit the security of the Louvre was embarrassingly weak, tourists say they were totally confused and panicked the whole time, unions point to years of understaffing and under-investment, and the heist has triggered a national reckoning about how cultural safeguards are slipping.

One good thing that’s come out of this whole ordeal is the way the general public around the world is reacting to it all. It has sparked a wave of creativity and humor. The Louvre may have lost a lot of loot, but at least there are plenty of jokes — and those are priceless.

SKIMS Isn’t Beating Around the Bush

Kim Kardashian’s SKIMS has been making headlines since before it launched in 2019 (anyone remember the cringeworthy moment when it was supposed to be called Kimono?), and it’s been known to put out some wild collections (facewear anyone?), but this next drop takes the cake.

Previewed with a parody of a 1970s gameshow, “The Ultimate Bush” is a hair-raising thong… pun intended. While it’s hard to imagine anyone wearing these items, it is another genius marketing move by Kardashian and the SKIMS team, which keeps the buzz around the brand. It’s also sort of fun to imagine the brainstorming session that brought about this collection.

Whether you think it’s tacky or a bit of marketing genius, there’s no denying that it’s gotten everyone talking. Which, come to think of it, was probably the point.

  • 🗑️ One person’s trash is another person’s… vase? An artist known simply as Lena, who dabbles in tattooing, oil painting, and ceramics, has made a series of super quirky vases shaped like black garbage bags. Honestly? Love and want them all.

  • 🖼️ The Louvre heist isn’t the only art escapade that’s happened recently. A Picasso painting has vanished en route to an exhibition in Granada. The 1919 Still Life with Guitar, worth around €600,000, disappeared somewhere between Madrid and its destination, prompting a police investigation into possible insider mishandling or theft.

  • 🪆 Mattel Creations and MoMa have joined forces to create an adorable collection of toys and art objects inspired by art history. In this collection, Barbie doubles as a canvas fro Van Gogh’s Starry Night. Meanwhile, Dalí and Monet are turned into cute tiny figures in their own Little People Collector sets.

  • 💎 Another collaboration that’s caught our eye this week is an unlikely pair that has teamed up for the most luxurious listening experience. Loop Earplugs and Swarovski bring you the Loop x Swarovski Experience 2 earplugs, featuring eight Millenia-cut Swarovski crystals. These are earplugs you definitely can’t afford to lose!

  • 🧊 A 3,000-pound ice sculpture spelling out “Democracy” was installed on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., where it slowly melted away. Made by artists Nora Ligorano and Marshall Reese, the sculpture is a powerful visualization of “the feelings and the sadness and the horror of Americans.”

  • 🧌 Artist Kara Walker has taken a statue of Confederate general Stonewall Jackson riding his horse into battle that once stood in Virginia, dismembered it, and rearranged its broken pieces to create a disfigured monster of sorts. As a press release explains, “[I]nstead of charging into battle, Walker’s horseman wanders in Civil War purgatory, dragging its sword over a ruined battlefield.”

  • 🪭 Ever wonder how art conservators restore fragile objects from hundreds of years ago? Watch how Susan Walker restores this delicate 18-century fan with tweezers, porcupine quills, sequins, silver foil, and more.

  • 🎭 Two weeks ago we talked about Tilly Norwood, the AI “actress” that was causing waves. Well, leave it to Ryan Reynolds to turn that into an ad for Mint Mobile using the real, human Natalie “Tilly” Norwood.

  • 🍼 Love Is Blind may have gotten a bit off the rails, but we still reminisce about the epic first season that kept us company during the pandemic. Which is why we’re over the moon that fan-favorite couple Cameron and Lauren have welcomed their first child.

  • 📖 Kevin Federline’s memoir is out and it is, as expected, filled with stories and musings about his ex-wife Britney Spears. Spears, for her part, is not pleased and came back with a scathing message on Instagram. Whatever your thoughts on Britney, you have to feel for her. Divorced for 19 years and still talking about it for a check? Something just feels icky about it.

  • 🏝️ The reality crossover we never knew we needed is here with some of our favorite Survivors starring in a campaign ad for NYC mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani. Guess who was voted off the island? We’ll give you a hint, his last name begins with a C and rhymes with Duomo.

  • 🍿 KPop Demon Hunters Sing Along is making its way to theaters again, just in time for the Halloween weekend. Warm up your vocal chords and get your popcorn ready.

  • 🍎 Apple TV is finally getting on board with the public and dropping the + from its name. Will other brands follow suit?

  • 👽 If you’re someone who firmly believes that we aren’t the only beings in the universe, you’ll want to tune into The Age of Disclosure. Debuting on Prime in late November, the doc details the “80-year global cover-up of non-human intelligent life.”
