Welcome back to The High Low!

It’s Women’s History Month! It’s perfect timing after the BRIT Awards aired this past weekend, because the women who performed at the music award show definitely made it worth watching and listening to. So, we’re celebrating some of those performances this week.

(We know the world is extremely chaotic at the moment, and it can be difficult to focus on anything else, but hopefully we can provide some respite.)

Read to the end for an incredible dance break.

The Amazing Women Musicians at the BRIT Awards

In case you didn’t know what a powerhouse Rosalía is, her performance at the BRIT Awards over the weekend made it very clear. The Spanish singer performed “Berghain” with a special appearance from Björk. Words do not do this unfettered display of artistry justice. As one commenter on YouTube described it: “This is art. This is so human. AI could never.”

The last minute of the 4-minute performance is especially exciting as Rosalía, backed by dozens of dancers, begins to rave, headbang, and generally let loose onstage. The energy is palpable as their bodies all move and gyrate to the pounding beat in a contained chaos of sorts.

Raye is a huge hit in the UK, but I think she should be way bigger worldwide, especially in the US. This woman can sing! She is Amy Winehouse, Adele, and Etta James rolled into one. Her performance at the BRITs is just one of many stellar sets she’s entertained audiences with over the years. Her singing, songwriting, style, and soulful performances are, altogether, the complete package. She is a living legend in the making, sure to join the ranks of other single-named pop icons.

Olivia Dean is having an incredible year. Fresh off her win at the Grammys for Best New Artist, she snagged 4 BRIT awards, including British Artist of the Year and British Album of the Year. She actually won in every category she was nominated in. And she performed her super catchy tune, “Man I Need.” Her whole album is a delight, and this song is a great representation of the type of sound to expect from it. Also, I couldn’t help bopping my head and tapping my toes throughout this simple yet wholesome set.

Speaking of artists having an incredible year: EJAE, Audrey Nuna, and Rei Ami have been at every major award show, performing “Golden” from KPop Demon Hunters. This is a highly difficult song to get perfect (because of its 3-octave range and the high notes that EJAE has to hit), but this HUNTR/X trio definitely sealed the Honmoon at the BRITs.

  • 🥖 Artist Lee Jimin creates bread made entirely of fabric. A slice of white bread, a baguette, a croissant — she has mastered the art of recreating some our favorite carbs as light and airy 3D fabric sculptures. In fact, she’s recently rendered an entire breakfast in this beautiful way.

  • 🪡 Indigenous artist Kimberly Dawn Robertson has been “bead bombing” public spaces in Los Angeles with a very clear message: “FUCK ICE.” Using the traditional peyote-stitch technique, she used roughly 30,000 pony beads to create a medicine-wheel colored graphic that she installed on utility poles across Tovaangar.

  • 🍭 Would you lick a sculpture in a museum? What if it was made of sugar? Berlin-based artist Joseph Marr creates sculptures made entirely of sugar and, for some reason, people like licking the artworks on exhibition. Even the sculptor is surprised by this. It seems we’ve learned nothing from Covid…

  • 💅 Fingernail art can be beautiful and elegant or even creepy and trippy, but we’ve never seen customizable interactive nail art like this before. These super whimsical nails gives you two adorable little characters to dress up with accessories that are painted on your other nails! It is difficult to explain!! Watch the TikTok!!!

  • ♻️ Over 100,000 bottle caps were used to create the world’s tallest recycled mural. Venezuelan artist Óscar Olivares constructed what some are calling the “Latin American Mona Lisa” in El Salvador, thanks to the help of the local community who provided the discarded bits of plastic.

  • 🏡 We’re going to the cottage! Or, at least, we could be going to the famed cottage from Heated Rivalry. The Barlochan Cottage is now up on Airbnb for about $181 per night. Unfortunately, it seems to be all booked up for the foreseeable future.

  • 📺 Quick TV Review/Recap (🚨 some spoilers 🚨):

    • Bridgerton (on Netflix): This season, which is its fourth, might be the best of the bunch. It’s hard to beat the first season’s introduction to the romantic television series, but we’re suckers for Benophie’s upper/lower class romance. (It’s very High-Low!)

    • Love is Blind (on Netflix): There’s so much to unpack here… but we’ll say this: we’re glad they’re condensing the weddings to basically just one episode (they’re always the most boring). We just want to see who winds up getting married and then watch the reunion to see how long it took for them to get a divorce. If this show has taught us anything, it’s that love is NOT blind. Also, why do they cast the worst men?

    • SNL (on NBC): Connor Storrie hosted this past weekend and proved he’s a total star. He’s great on Heated Rivalry, but he’s more than just a caked up hockey player. He’s actually a great comedic actor! The episode itself was decent, but it does feel like the writers missed more opportunities to utilize his many strengths. The promo for the show was super fun though (as were the later-released bloopers). Also, kudos to the audience at the live show for cheering appropriately for the US women’s ice hockey team players.

    • Survivor (on CBS): Survivor 50 has finally premiered and we almost lost a total legend in the very first elimination. Luckily, Cirie is still in the game, and something tells us she’ll make it to merge… (Tiffany and Rizo have both said they loved playing with Cirie in red carpet interviews, even though they are not currently on the same tribe with her.) Like two-time Survivor winner Parvati Shallow said: “If [Cirie] doesn’t take the win this time we riot in the streets.”

    • The Traitors (on Peacock): Well, Rob Rausch did it. He won the whole game as a traitor and tricked every single person in the process, including Maura Higgins, who was left in utter shock at the end.
